Taranaki Animal Protection Trust helps protect thousands of animals in the Taranaki region every year.

We step in to help animals who are injured, sick, abused, abandoned or lost.

Cat Rescue

Cat Rescue is a large part of what we do at TAPT.  In the last year alone, we have rescued over 500 cats, kittens and neo-natals from a variety of situations; left behind when owners moved, dumped at beaches and roadsides, born wild on streets or on farms.

While we mostly rescue cats, we will work with other rescue organisations for dogs and other animals as well.

Rehabilitate

Many of the cats we rescue may not know what love is yet and are needing some extra care and support to get them ready for their forever homes.

TAPT volunteers and foster families work tirelessly to support the cats by giving them the care, environment, and the time they need to heal and adjust to life in a loving home.

Re-home

When our cats they are ready to be re-homed, we make sure that they will be a much-loved part of their new family.

Cat Retreat

We have an established cat retreat in a lovely rural setting.

The retreat is for cats who may need a bit more care, or time to adjust to life with humans, and sadly for some, the retreat has become their permanent home for a variety of reasons.

The retreat also houses many cats and kittens who are very ready to find their furever homes.

> We also have a cat sanctuary coming soon - watch this space!

Community Support

We support people who know the value and importance of having a family pet, but who struggle to pay the ‘over and above’ expenses by offering discounted desexing and microchipping deals.

We also do school visits to teach students about animal rescue, proper handling, being kind to animals and a variety of other topics depending on the age of the students.

Colony Support

We support people who feed and desex abandoned cats (colony mothers) and our volunteers oversee at least 12 different colonies in New Plymouth alone.
